NMMC Announces 'Green Ward' Competition To Promote Environmental Conservation

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has unveiled a city-wide "Green Ward" competition to boost environmental conservation efforts among residents. The initiative aims to convert the eight administrative wards of Navi Mumbai into more sustainable and visually appealing areas. Ranked second among environmentally-friendly cities in Maharashtra under the state's Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, the NMMC launched the competition to intensify environmental movement through public involvement.

Running from August 2026 to March 31, 2027, the "Green Ward" competition targets enhancing green cover, enhancing parks and open spaces, improving road medians and junctions, and fostering biodiversity. Municipal ward officers and tree officers will oversee various initiatives in their respective wards. The competition criteria include innovative landscaping, planting native species to control pollution, beautifying parks, roads, and open spaces, conserving biodiversity, developing tourism-oriented gardens, and cultivating special flowering and fruit-bearing plants.

Citizen and student participation play a significant role in the competition. Wards can involve school students in tree conservation activities and conduct environmental awareness programs. Initiatives involving corporate social responsibility (CSR) to increase green areas will also be considered. The competition will assess the quality of routine garden maintenance, speedily resolving complaints received through the civic body's grievance app, and efforts to save trees affected by development projects.

Additional initiatives eligible for evaluation include tree rallies, seed collection drives, composting green waste, creative use of dry tree waste, conserving heritage trees, and innovative environmental awareness activities. Each ward must prepare a 'Green Profile' at the competition's start, documenting existing environmental conditions and tracking activities such as planting, beautification, and public participation.

The civic body requires photographic documentation of innovative works, featuring 'before' and 'after' photographs with Google Map-based evidence where necessary. The final assessment will occur during the competition's last 15 days. An evaluation committee, headed by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Gardens) and including representatives from environmental organizations and NGOs, will oversee the final assessment to ensure transparency in the scoring process.
