According to Rathod, one should cover their mouth with a hand or napkin while using a toothpick to prevent saliva from spreading and to maintain a low profile.

She highlighted the small groove at the top of many toothpicks, known as the "rest," and advised breaking the toothpick at this point before placing the pointed edge in the groove. This method ensures that the toothpick is not visible and reduces the risk of contamination. Dr. Anjana Kalia, an Ayurvedic Doctor & Nutritionist, recommends similar practices, advising users to be discreet, shield their mouth, and use toothpicks only in informal or semi-formal situations to avoid spreading germs.
