Lions training camp observations: Tate Ratledge takes reps at center

On Sunday, Detroit Lions training camp observers noted several noteworthy developments. Tate Ratledge was seen taking the majority of center reps, replacing Juice Scruggs. Ben Bartch and Christian Mahogany played guard when Scruggs was at center, while Ratledge and Mahogany guarded when Scruggs filled the center position. The practice was marred by sloppy performance due to rain halfway through.

Ratledge had two botched snaps and Scruggs had four. This shift comes as the team has no definitive answer for their best five offensive linemen with Cade Mays absent. Seth McLaughlin, who performed well at center in a preseason game, may not have the size advantage, while Scruggs is recovering from a soft-tissue injury and Ratledge is new to the position.

Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson had an exceptional day, knocking down Jared Goff and causing chaos. Rookie edge defender Derrick Moore showcased his abilities with several first-team reps, including chasing down Goff after a forced incompletion. Edge defender Ahmed Hassanein recorded another sack while working with the second team.

Rookie cornerback Keith Abney II earned first-team reps and made several solid plays. Kicker Jake Bates struggled throughout the day, weathering a challenging practice. Rookie defensive lineman Tyre West made notable contributions, including a tackle-for-loss and a tackle-for-loss against Raheem Blackshear.
