The death of Jason Arday, a Black professor of sociology of education at Cambridge, has sparked intense scrutiny of his academic credentials and career trajectory. Found dead at his London home, Arday was 41 years old. His appointment at Cambridge was marked by allegations of overpromotion, particularly by the universities of Cambridge, Durham, and Glasgow.

Arday had resigned earlier this week, citing the relentless accusations, speculation, and public commentary that had taken a "profound toll" on him. His memoir revealed that he was diagnosed with autism at age three, unable to speak until age 11, and unable to read and write until age 18. Despite these claims, Arday was the youngest Black full professor in Cambridge's history at age 37.
