LATEST: Europe's battle with wildfires continues

Wildfires have been raging across Europe, exacerbated by scorching temperatures and parched terrain. The deadliest of these blazes occurred in eastern Belgium, where a nature reserve fire has expanded to 3,000 hectares, prompting the evacuation of Monschau, a German town near the border. Over 250 firefighters and emergency responders have been deployed to combat the inferno, though conditions remain dire.

Smoke from the blaze has enveloped the German-Belgian border, necessitating an urgent evacuation in Monschau. Four individuals in Croatia have been apprehended for allegedly igniting wildfires along the Adriatic coast, driven by drought and heatwaves. A fire in southwestern France, now 1,700 hectares in size, shows signs of improvement due to cooler temperatures.

Another blaze in the northeastern Ardennes has affected around 100 hectares, a record-breaking occurrence for the region. In Greece, Skyros Island is under fire, with Mayor Kyriakos Antonopoulos expressing optimism about its swift containment. Meanwhile, Germany's Eifel region witnessed the evacuation of 1,800 residents from Hürtgenwald as a major fire approached residential areas.

Despite the fire's halt, emergency personnel remain present. France is dispatching additional firefighting resources to aid the ongoing efforts.
