Karachi-East among six districts selected for facial recognition attendance system

The Sindh government plans to launch a facial recognition attendance system for government schools in six districts, including Karachi-East, on Monday. The system, called Facial Recognition Attendance & Monitoring Evaluation System (Frames), aims to digitize school attendance province-wide and bring transparency to the process. The selected districts are Karachi-East, Hyderabad, Naushahro Feroze, Ghotki, Jacobabad, and Umerkot.

The province's education workforce totals 207,440, with 59,136 female staff and 148,304 male staff. Male staff make up approximately 71.5% of the total workforce, while female staff account for 29%. The pilot phase will monitor attendance for teachers and students in the selected districts. Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah stated that the selection of districts was aimed at testing the system in diverse settings before scaling it up.

He emphasized that verified, real-time data on attendance will help improve learning outcomes and institutional discipline. The app uses facial recognition and geo-fencing to mark and verify attendance, with each entry linked to HRMIS profiles, school data, and geo-tags. Teachers do not need personal mobile phones and can mark attendance using a head teacher or colleague's device.

Teachers will also be able to view their attendance records on the app and download them monthly. The FRAMES app is available for both Android and iOS devices.
