Jared Kushner met with Hamas leaders in Egypt to discuss Gaza peace deal

Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and Middle East negotiator, met with Hamas leaders in Egypt on Sunday to discuss a U.S.-backed peace deal, according to a source familiar with the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to translate the plan into concrete steps, such as maintaining the Israel-Gaza ceasefire, transferring governing responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, and ensuring Hamas has no future role in Gaza's administration, among other things.

This meeting was confirmed by a regional official and a Hamas official, both speaking anonymously due to confidentiality reasons. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently rejected the peace plan and vowed no military withdrawal until Hamas is fully disarmed. Kushner, who met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi earlier, is set to travel to Israel on Monday, where he is expected to meet with Netanyahu.

The foreign ministers of several countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan, and Indonesia, condemned Israel's rejection of the peace plan, stating that Israel now bears responsibility for obstructing Gaza's peace efforts. The 15-point U.S.-backed plan includes Israeli forces withdrawing from parts of Gaza as disarmament is completed, along with an international stabilizing force and a new Palestinian police force.

The conflict began with Hamas's terrorist attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and since a ceasefire in October 2025, Israel has continued firing on Gaza, killing over 1,200 people.
