Iran war commander visits USS Abraham Lincoln as carrier prepares to return home

The US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln received a visit from its war commander, Admiral Brad Cooper, as the vessel prepared to return home after a nine-month deployment. The Lincoln, which played a crucial role in US strikes against Iran and President Trump's blockade of Iranian ports, had completed over 200 days in a combat zone and launched more than 10,000 sorties.

Admiral Cooper, who was on a 10-day tour of the region, described the deployment as one of the most operationally intense and consequential in modern times. Reports of deteriorating living conditions, supply shortages, plumbing issues, and mental-health struggles among crew members have raised concerns about the crew's safety and well-being.

Senate Democrats urged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to address these concerns, warning that conditions might have deteriorated to a level that could endanger the crew. A person reportedly went overboard in early August but was quickly rescued. Hegseth dismissed these reports as misrepresented and claimed that the deployment was not as lengthy as some suggested, hinting that another carrier would potentially replace the Lincoln.

While acknowledging a small number of mental-health cases, Hegseth assured that no lives were lost. Meal plans were altered when resupply was unavailable, but no meals were skipped. The US intends to maintain its blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely, rotating ships through the region. Hegseth stated that the operation could continue indefinitely, exacerbating the pressure on naval crews already operating at a high tempo.

The Strait of Hormuz tensions remain high following an attack on an ADNOC vessel, the third such incident involving one of the Emirati energy company's ships in less than a week.
