India's Padikkal steals the show with 167 in first Sri Lanka Test

Galle witnessed a stellar performance from Indian cricketer Devdutt Padikkal on the second day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka. The 23-year-old opener scored a well-composed 167 runs off 230 balls, featuring 15 fours and a six, in just over five hours. This innings marked Padikkal's third Test match for India and showcased his ability to adapt after being recalled to the team after a two-year injury absence.

Padikkal's innings were particularly notable as he performed exceptionally well against both spinners and seamers, with Indian batsman Dhruv Jurel praising his comeback performance. However, Sri Lanka quickly gained momentum in the afternoon session with their spinners managing to pick up three crucial wickets, including those of Padikkal and KL Rahul. Prabath Jayasuriya and Rishabh Pant were among the notable wicket-takers.

The batters at number five and six, Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar, worked hard to stabilize the innings, putting on a 55-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Unfortunately, Rahul was forced to retire on 77 due to cramps, only managing to add five more runs on day two. Jayasuriya, who was batting at number six, managed to score 51 runs off 68 balls and formed a 51-run stand with Suthar, which was pivotal for India. Paceman Asitha Fernando sealed the innings with the final wicket by dismissing Mohammad Siraj.

After the innings, Sri Lanka's captain, Jayasuriya, highlighted the importance of adapting to the deteriorating pitch conditions in Galle, where the toss often plays a crucial role. He urged the batters to come together and deliver a strong performance. The match will resume 15 minutes early on day three to cover lost time, with Galle having hosted its 50th Test match, marking the first Asian ground to do so. India's record against Sri Lanka remains impressive, with no losses since 2015.
