Indiana requests federal aid as relentless flooding continues in Midwest

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) — Rescue operations were underway on Saturday as historic flooding inundated the White River in Indianapolis, prompting authorities to issue evacuations and water rescues. Emergency managers estimated that several dozen people and their pets had been rescued by midday, with the number expected to rise as central Indiana continues to grapple with the devastating effects of the floods.

The damage was concentrated along the river corridor from Hamilton County into the northern Indianapolis suburbs. In Delaware County, sheriff deputies discovered the body of a 58-year-old woman who they believe perished while attempting to drive through floodwaters. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, along with emergency managers, urged residents along the river to evacuate, describing the floods as a once-in-a-lifetime event that had set new records.

Governor Mike Braun requested a presidential emergency declaration to secure federal resources for response and recovery efforts following days of record rainfall. Flash flood warnings and watches were issued across central Indiana, with forecasters predicting the White River would crest Saturday evening in the Indianapolis area, where National Guard vehicles were aiding rescue efforts.
