Hurricane Lala Tracker as Storm Sparks Power Outage in Hawaii

Hurricane Lala caused extensive damage in Hawaii over the weekend, with powerful winds and torrential rains leading to power outages and dangerous conditions. The hurricane strengthened into a hurricane on Saturday, reaching maximum sustained winds of 75 mph near Hawaii Island. Forecasters warned of life-threatening flooding, landslides, and dangerous surf conditions across multiple islands as Lala tracked westward.

Heavy rain and tropical-storm-force winds were expected to impact Maui County, Oahu, and Kauai, with between 10 and 20 inches of rain in some areas. The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of up to 154 mph on Mauna Kea, causing significant damage to power lines and transportation. Hawaii's Department of Transportation closed Hilo International Airport and ports, while emergency shelters were opened.

At least one storm-related death was reported, and multiple homes were destroyed by flash flooding. Hawaii Electric reported over 88,000 customers without power, making it one of the largest outages in recent years. Restoration efforts were hampered by dangerous weather conditions, and officials warned of prolonged outages.
