Govt opts for high-level talks as strike by truckers, edible oil transporters strains ports

Federal minister Aleem Khan and Sindh governor will meet truckers and edible oil transporters in Karachi on Sunday in a bid to resolve a strike that has caused port congestion. Security forces are also involved in efforts to break the deadlock. The strike, now in its eighth day, involves over 8,000 transporters from various categories protesting against a seven percent withholding tax on goods transport, up from two percent for fuel tankers.

They also demand a reduction to two percent for their tax and an end to Customs impounding vehicles carrying smuggled goods. Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan and Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar will attend the talks, which are being led by the All Pakistan Goods Transport Ittehad. The strike is ongoing, with thousands of vehicles still off the roads, and the government has offered temporary relief on some demands, including dedicated parking facilities for trailers and trucks at Karachi port. Officials say a resolution is still needed to ensure a sustainable solution.
