Fresh off Toronto title, Iga Swiatek wins first match at Cincinnati Open

Mason, Ohio - Iga Swiatek, the fresh winner of the Toronto title, secured her first match win at the Cincinnati Open on Sunday. The Polish tennis star triumphed over Colombian Emiliana Arango with a score of 6-3, 6-0 in a match that took place on center court. This victory marked Swiatek's seventh consecutive win at the Cincinnati Open, following her championship title in the city last year.

Despite having just returned from Toronto, Swiatek stated that she was not overly fatigued, attributing her readiness to the fact that she typically enters match mode shortly after arriving at a tournament. She expressed a preference for spending her time relaxing before each event.

Earlier on Sunday, fellow top-ranked player Aryna Sabalenka continued her impressive streak, defeating Australian Talia Gibson 6-2, 7-6 (2). Sabalenka's winning streak now stands at 15 matches, dating back to October 2024. Additionally, Elena Rybakina, ranked second, overcame American Taylor Townsend with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Rybakina, who reached the semifinals last year in Cincinnati, is aiming for her 14th hard-court title at the event, having claimed the Australian Open title earlier this year.

The men's tournament saw 10th-ranked Taylor Fritz eliminate fellow American Alex Michelsen 6-3, 6-4. Felix Auger-Aliassime, currently ranked 11th, made a strong return to hard-court play after recovering from a lower back injury, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. This match marked Auger-Aliassime's first hard-court appearance since March.

Daniil Medvedev also advanced with a victory over qualifier Marco Trungelliti, 6-4, 7-5. Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, ranked 19th, made history by reaching the third round of the tournament, becoming the third teenager to do so since Michael Chang in 1990 and Pete Sampras in 1991. Fonseca defeated Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (2).
