First Dutch ambassador to Ukraine: Kyiv has trump cards no one saw coming a year ago

Robert Serry, the first Dutch ambassador to Ukraine, shared his insights on the evolving situation in an interview with Ukrinform. A year ago, former President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Zelensky, "You have no cards." Today, Ukraine possesses strategic advantages that were unforeseen just a year ago. Serry emphasized that Ukraine's successful transformation of the war into a new form of warfare, particularly in drone technology, has become a critical asset.

This technological edge not only safeguards Ukraine's security but also contributes to the broader security of the Netherlands and Europe.

Despite Ukraine's advancements, Serry maintained a cautious outlook, noting that the ongoing war has exacted a heavy toll on lives and security. He described the current state as a "mutually hurting stalemate," where neither side can achieve a decisive victory, and the continuous conflict is imposing unbearable costs on both parties. Ukraine's successes in targeting critical Russian infrastructure have triggered Russian retaliation through massive ballistic missile attacks, including civilian areas, particularly Kyiv.

Serry highlighted a potential path forward, suggesting that former President Trump, with his unique leverage over Russia, could play a pivotal role in ending the war. He advocated for a more targeted pressure on Moscow rather than placing demands on Ukraine, proposing a twenty-point plan that could serve as a foundation for serious negotiations.

Serry expressed optimism that Trump might attempt to mediate again by the end of 2026, emphasizing the need for a shift away from previous approaches that prioritized territorial concessions over resolving the conflict.
