Finlay Tarling crash video: Shocking scenes emerge after British cyclist's death as union calls for better helmets

British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, lost his life in a tragic collision during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal on Friday, August 14. The accident occurred near Ponte de Lima, involving a non-racing vehicle traveling in the opposite direction of the race. Despite receiving medical treatment, Tarling succumbed to his injuries.

The stage between Melgaço and Fafe was later made neutral and the podium ceremony was canceled. Tarling, a member of the NSN Development Team, was riding behind the main peloton when the incident took place. Images from the crash site showed the severely damaged bicycle and the guard reported that they are investigating the safety measures.

Questions have been raised about how the vehicle managed to enter the race route, and the UCI has acknowledged the need for improved safety procedures. Tarling, a Welsh rider from Ceredigion, was the younger brother of professional cyclist Josh Tarling. He had previously competed for the NSN Development Team and had garnered attention for his time-trial skills.

His death prompted the NSN Development Team to withdraw from the remainder of the Volta a Portugal. The Cyclists Professional Association, the riders' union, expressed their sadness and called for better helmet standards, citing Tarling's untimely death as a somber reminder.
