FG targets abandoned mine pits for energy, tourism

The Federal Government of Nigeria has identified more than 4,000 abandoned mine pits across Plateau State as potential sites for investment in energy, tourism, and fishery. This announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, who also warned illegal miners against entering abandoned pits without licenses.

The tragedy that occurred at a mine pit in Kassa, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, which resulted in the deaths of seven people, could have been avoided if the miners had obtained the necessary permit. Alake emphasized that licensed artisanal miners would receive training and a more sustainable source of income from the ministry.

The government is seeking private investors to transform these abandoned pits into productive economic assets. The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has already rehabilitated 59 abandoned mine pits using advanced Geographic Information System satellite mapping and Artificial Intelligence technology. The Plateau State has been selected as the pilot beneficiary of this initiative.

The government is also taking steps to prevent mining companies from leaving environmental hazards behind after operations by activating the Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation Fund.
