Ferrari's first electric car sells for $40 million at charity auction

Ferrari's pioneering electric vehicle, the 2026 Ferrari Luce, has set a new record even before being acquired. The bespoke car, known as "Chassis 0," achieved the highest price ever paid at auction for a new car, selling for precisely $40 million at an RM Sotheby's charity auction in Monterey. According to Road & Track, the Luce outsold the previous record of $26 million set in 2025 for a customized Ferrari Daytona SP3. The entire $40 million proceeds will be donated to The Ferrari Foundation for educational initiatives.

Despite its record-breaking price, the buyer will not receive the vehicle until the first quarter of 2027. The electric Luce is expected to return to Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello before being delivered to the purchaser. Ferrari Luce shattered the previous record set in 2025, when a custom Ferrari Daytona SP3 was auctioned for $26 million. The Luce's sale is especially significant given the initial criticism from traditional Ferrari fans following the introduction of its first fully electric model.

Designed by LoveFrom, the studio founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, the Luce's exterior is painted in Madreperla Semi-Gloss and features a pigment that shifts from green to violet depending on the angle and intensity of the light. The cabin is upholstered in Perla Le Mans metallic leather made from Swiss hides, with black elements finished in Grigio Corvara.

The car also boasts custom wheels, brake calipers, and a Ferrari logo against an optical-white background. The Luce's "Chassis 0" status signifies it as the first production chassis of the Luce programme, making it a unique piece of automotive history.
