Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer John Paris in Induced Coma Following Medical Emergency

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris was admitted to a medically induced coma after suffering a serious medical emergency on August 6, just before the band was set to perform alongside Lionel Richie at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Their performance was postponed due to the incident, and Paris' condition worsened, requiring doctors to sedate him again to stabilize his body.

Despite a brief period where he regained consciousness and jokingly requested to be taken away, Paris' health remains precarious. His family, including his wife Kathy Merrick and their daughter Kyla, have been by his side throughout his ordeal. A GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $70,000 towards a $75,000 goal to support Paris and his family.

The band subsequently resumed their tour, with former member Sonny Emory stepping in for drumming duties. The original San Francisco show is rescheduled for September 26. Paris joined the band in 2001 and has contributed to several successful studio albums. Earth, Wind & Fire, established in Chicago in 1969, has sold over 90 million records worldwide, known for their fusion of R&B, funk, soul, jazz, and pop music.

The band achieved their only Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with "Shining Star" in 1975, and have won six Grammy Awards, with their biggest hit being "Let's Groove" at No. 3. The band topped the Billboard 200 chart in 1975 with "That's the Way of the World" and "Gratitude," and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. A documentary directed by Questlove is currently in production, chronicling the band's legacy.
