Disney offers fans an escapist bubble at D23 event

Disney entices fans with an immersive escape at D23, its biennial convention held in Anaheim, California. This three-day extravaganza draws tens of thousands of enthusiasts, many of whom reside near Disneyland. The event, dubbed the "Ultimate Disney Fan Experience," offers guests a chance to indulge in galas, acquire exclusive items, swap pins, and snap photos with beloved costumed characters. Passes range from $50 to $2,500, a modest price for an escape from reality, as one fan put it.

Monica Romero, a 37-year-old attendee, shared her sentiment: "Our world is so chaotic and unstable, and it seems like the bad guys are always winning." She found solace in the Disney convention, where she believed "good can always win." Skyla, who frequents the "happiest place on Earth" twice a week, echoed similar sentiments. "You go into the park, and the real world gets to disappear for a while, and you just get to enjoy that time and just have happiness," she remarked, dressed as Lady, the cocker spaniel from "Lady and the Tramp."

D23 serves as a platform for celebrities, filmmakers, and creatives to promote their projects. Commercial partners also showcase Disney-branded merchandise. Some fans bring collectibles to trade, like 19-year-old Disneyland worker Chase Halon, who has amassed numerous pins and continues to seek more. His prized pin, of the purple dinosaur Figment, could be worth $5,000, he speculated.

The event was adorned with opportunities to capture photos with fantasy worlds of favorite characters, ranging from classic princesses and witches to Homer Simpson and Toy Story. At the Simpsons set, fans recreated the meme of Homer backing into a bush. At the Devil Wears Prada space, they posed for the cover of the fictional magazine Runway. In the Pixar world, they stepped into Andy's room, filled with toys. Each attraction provided a unique mental vacation from reality.
