DAP should stay in govt, but reassess ties with Anwar, says delegate

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian opposition party, DAP, should continue to be part of the ruling coalition government, but its Kuala Lumpur delegate, Sangeet Kaur Deo, has called for a reassessment of its relationship with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, according to the party's special congress today.

Deo argued that DAP should remain in the federal government for now, as they need time to rebuild trust and confidence after the reforms undertaken by their ministers. However, she acknowledged that there are significant issues facing the party, including corruption-related scandals that have escalated during their time in power. Deo stated that they had come into office with the promise of eradicating corruption, but have fallen short of that goal.

She also pointed out that Umno, the ruling party, has been openly attacking DAP despite being part of the same coalition. Deo expressed concern that Anwar Ibrahim has divided the coalition partners rather than bringing them together. She urged the central executive committee to seriously reconsider their relationship with Anwar Ibrahim, stating that he has empowered Umno and is not working towards genuine collaboration.

The DAP special congress, attended by over 4,000 delegates, is deciding whether the party should continue to be part of the unity government for the remainder of the parliamentary term.
