Congress leader's son killed in Nadia district of West Bengal

Congress leader Anishur Rahman and his son Abu Sufiyan were murdered in West Bengal's Nadia district on the night of August 14, 2026. The father and son were shot at by assailants while traveling in a vehicle at the Nakasipara railway gate. The perpetrators dragged the victims from the vehicle and beheaded them. Three individuals were apprehended on Sunday, August 16, 2026, in connection with the heinous crime.

One of the arrested individuals, Fatema Bibi, is the head of Nadia's Haranagar panchayat. Two of her associates, Ali Mandal and Mithun Sheikh, were also taken into custody. A court in Krishnanagar held the accused in police custody for nine days. The Congress marked August 16, 2026, as a "Black Day" across the state, urging all democracy-loving people to come together to condemn the political violence.

West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee announced the statement on social media. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the murder. He alleged that Jubbar Sheikh, who is currently in jail, played a role in the crime. Ms. Adhikari's statement further claimed that the Trinamool Congress leader's wife, who heads a Trinamool panchayat, was among those arrested.

Opposition politicians, from both the Congress and Trinamool parties, lamented that the murders indicated a deterioration in law and order conditions in the state.
