Cameroon claim first Wafcon title with victory over Malawi

Cameroon secured their inaugural Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title by defeating tournament newcomers Malawi 3-0. The match, held in Rabat, Morocco, saw Marie Ngah Manga put Indomitable Lionesses ahead in the 20th minute with a close-range header. Naomi Eto extended the lead with a remarkable volley on the half-hour mark.

Cameroon sealed the win in the 33rd minute of added time, as Eto's precise pass allowed Ngah Manga to score the decisive goal. Malawi, ranked 153rd globally, made it to the final with the attacking talents of twins Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga. Despite their valiant efforts, the Southern African team was unable to overcome Cameroon's formidable defense.

Cameroon's goalkeeper Michaely Bihina made headlines for her outstanding performance, despite missing a chance to add to the score. The victory is particularly significant for Cameroon, as they had previously failed to qualify for the 2024 edition and had lost three Wafcon finals in the past. As winners, Cameroon will receive $2 million (£1.48 million) in prize money and join Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa as the only nations to have won the title.

Both teams will compete at the 2027 Women's FIFA World Cup in Brazil alongside Algeria and Morocco, who also reached the semi-finals.
