BMW’s ascent from an also-ran to WEC title contender

BMW has rapidly risen to become a serious contender in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) following the third year of its Hypercar programme. Robin Frijns and Rene Rast lead the Hypercar standings, while BMW itself occupies the second position in the manufacturers' standings, trailing only Toyota. This significant turnaround from last season, when BMW finished fifth with 87 points, highlights the team's progress.

Despite scrutiny over the BMW M Hybrid V8 project, which had been in existence for three years in IMSA and two seasons in WEC, the brand invested heavily in improvements. Finalizing a new aerodynamic package for 2026, aimed at better cooling efficiency and predictability, turned out to be crucial. The changes included a smaller kidney grille and numerous internal updates, such as modified airflow channels.

The most visible change was the smaller grille, but most of the improvements were hidden, focusing on internal cooling and airflow management. This technical upgrade, combined with consolidated factory operations under WRT, expanded into North America, gave BMW a competitive edge. BMW's resurgence is evident in its recent victories, with wins at Spa-Francorchamps and Sao Paulo.

Team principal Vincent Vosse attributes these successes to improved race execution and strategic decision-making. Although there were times in 2025 when BMW failed to realize the full potential of the car due to poor strategies, the Munich-based brand has capitalized on opportunities in WEC, outgunning faster competitors. Vosse acknowledges that while they may not have the fastest car, their race management has improved significantly.

The team remains optimistic about the rest of the season, with no regrets about their near-miss at Le Mans, as they secured a podium finish due to strategic decisions. As the season progresses, BMW and Toyota are expected to remain at the forefront of the championship, although the Middle East's cancellation of races due to the war in the region has altered the championship's dynamics.
