Belgium’s biggest wildfire on record heads towards Germany

On Sunday, Belgium faced its largest wildfire on record, threatening to cross the border into Germany. The blaze has already consumed 3,000 hectares of nature reserve land in the High Fens, a protected region in the east of the country. Firefighters from Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg joined forces, with the aid of Dutch helicopters, to contain the inferno.

Two fatalities were reported in Greece, where a wildfire on the Salamina island claimed lives, while French firefighters rushed to assist in Aragon, Spain, where a fire had razed 16,600 hectares.

Stephanie Ernoux, spokesperson for Wallonia, Belgium's southern region, stated that the defensive line keeping evacuated villages safe was holding strong. Despite the containment efforts, residents who had been evacuated on Saturday were advised not to return yet. The fire's scale has left officials astounded, with Karim Bouarfa, a fire brigade captain, remarking, "We would never have imagined that Belgium would be affected by a fire of this scale."

Scientists attribute the increasing frequency of such devastating fires to human-induced climate change, which amplifies hot and dry conditions that accelerate wildfire spread and longevity. Germany's Monschau city advised residents near the Belgian border to evacuate, warning of significant smoke pollution, despite the fire not expected to reach German soil. The European Union dispatched three helicopters and two water-bombing aircraft from various European nations to augment Belgium's emergency response on Saturday.
