2층까지 솟은 흙탕물, 차량 둥둥…거제 주민들 “이런 비 처음 봐”

On the morning of the 17th, heavy rainfall in Gyeongnam's Gyeongju City recorded a historic level, resulting in the loss of one life and injuries to two others. Video footage captured by residents showed a car being swept away by rapidly flowing water, struggling to navigate the road before coming to a halt on the road's median. The video uploader informed Gyeongju residents, "My parents live in Gyeongju and said this is the heaviest rainfall they've ever experienced."

In the Gyeongju district of Jangpil, four vehicles were seen being engulfed by the current. From a second-floor balcony, residents nervously observed the situation unfolding. Another video from the same location depicted floodwater from a sewer rising to chest level, surpassing the first floor's convenience store and completely overwhelming the road surface. Distorted asphalt and completely collapsed pavement were observed in various locations.

Video footage from above captured the road entirely submerged in mud, resembling a river. Residents shared their experiences on X (formerly Twitter), expressing shock at the unprecedented rainfall and the ongoing emergency alerts. Some residents reported that despite efforts to block the water in their apartment complex's underground parking, it continued to seep in. Many described this as the first time such widespread flooding had occurred after Typhoon Mamea.

At 4:42 AM on the morning of the 17th, a landslide occurred in front of the Gyeongju Okpo-dong 3 Apartment complex, causing partial damage to the first floor. One apartment resident lost their life, and two others sustained injuries. By 6 AM on the 17th, Gyeongju had accumulated 782.5 mm of rainfall, with the peak of 124.5 mm occurring overnight. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety declared the activation of Central Emergency Safety Headquarters (Central Office) on a Level 1 emergency basis from 6 AM on the 17th.
