What Dabo Swinney said about Clemson football QB competition after first scrimmage

Clemson's first preseason scrimmage ahead of the 2026 season did not provide clarity on the quarterback position. Coach Dabo Swinney stated on August 15 that junior Christopher Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds were still neck and neck in the competition to succeed Cade Klubnik, who was drafted by the New York Jets. Both Vizzina and Reynolds have been evenly matched throughout the preseason, with Swinney expressing admiration for their performance, particularly their running abilities.

Swinney was pleased with their ability to execute plays and make significant contributions with their legs. The team's second scrimmage is set for August 20. Clemson is currently ranked No. 23 in the USLMB Coaches Poll, while LSU holds the No. 13 spot. Klubnik, who had 21 rushing touchdowns and 878 yards during his tenure at Clemson, struggled with just 84 yards in his final season.

Vizzina, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound dual-threat quarterback, was recruited for his passing ability, having followed Klubnik for the past two years. Freshman Tait Reynolds, 6-2 and 215 pounds, came to Clemson in January and is now in the running for the starting role. Swinney highlighted the strengths of both players, noting that Vizzina is a big, strong, and athletic runner reminiscent of Tajh Boyd, who was Clemson's quarterback from 2010-2013 and led the team to an ACC championship in 2011.

While Vizzina's running ability is comparable to Boyd's, Swinney believes Tait's speed sets him apart, allowing him to score crucial touchdowns.
