We categorically deny claims circulating regarding detention of Iranian pilots: Advisor to PM, Official MoFA Spokesperson

Doha, Qatar - The advisor to the Prime Minister and the official spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, has strongly denied recent claims that Iranian pilots had been detained. In a post on his X account, Al-Ansari expressed surprise at these "misleading statements" coming at a time when Qatar is actively working on diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Al-Ansari clarified that contact was made with the Iranian pilots after they violated Qatar's airspace. He stated that, following the rules of engagement and after no response was received upon attempts to communicate, necessary measures were taken to protect the country's territory in accordance with international law. This stance was previously affirmed through official channels.

The spokesperson also noted that Qatar's search and rescue teams, renowned for their world-class expertise and capabilities, carried out their duties diligently in the search for the pilots' remains. In accordance with international humanitarian law, Qatar facilitated the handover of the remains of one of the pilots who was found to Iranian authorities.

Furthermore, Al-Ansari revealed that Qatar had extended an invitation to an Iranian team to visit Qatar in April to be briefed on the search and rescue operations. However, he noted that as of now, the Iranian side has not responded to this invitation.
