Voters punish politicians more for infidelity if their spouse leaves them

When a political candidate is caught in an infidelity scandal, voters tend to judge the politician more harshly if their spouse decides to leave the marriage, according to a recent study published in the *Journal of Political Marketing*. In addition, voters often seem to punish politicians from their own party more severely than those from opposing parties.

The research, led by Jason Gainous, a mass communication professor at the University of Sharjah, aimed to understand whether a spouse's decision to stay or leave an unfaithful political partner influences how voters perceive the candidate.

The study involved 1,401 participants who were presented with a fictional biography of a male candidate, with half identifying the candidate as a Democrat and the other half as a Republican. After reading the biography, participants rated their support for the candidate, based on factors such as likelihood of voting for him, sharing information on social media, donating, attending fundraisers, and trusting him.

In the next stage, participants read a mock news article revealing that the candidate had an affair with a legislative assistant, who lied to constituents before admitting to the relationship and expressing regret. Support for the candidate dropped after this scandal was revealed.

The final stage introduced the crucial experimental variable by detailing the spouse's reaction to the affair. Half of the participants read that the spouse decided to remain in the marriage and support the candidate, while the other half read that the spouse chose to separate from the politician. Participants were then asked to rate the candidate again.

The data showed that voters punished the candidate more severely when his wife decided to leave him, confirming the severity of his moral failure in the eyes of voters. Even when traditional gender roles were taken into account, voters who adhered more closely to such beliefs were harsher in their criticism.

Interestingly, the study found that voters were more likely to penalize a candidate from their own party than an opponent when the spouse left the relationship. This was especially true among strong Democrats and Republicans, where the penalty for the same act was greater when the candidate shared the same political affiliation.

Overall, the findings suggest that voters are more critical of politicians of their own party who engage in infidelity and are especially likely to do so when the spouse chooses to end the marriage.
