Venus Williams, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, suffered her 14th consecutive singles loss at the Cincinnati Open, falling to Colombian qualifier Emilia Arango 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. The 46-year-old American struggled, winning only 41% of her first-serve points, while Arango dominated with 71%. Williams, who has received a wildcard for both singles and doubles events, faced harsh criticism for taking wildcards into tournaments, with many arguing that she is replacing more deserving players.

Tennis insider Jon Wertheim, however, defended the decision, stating that while it's jarring to see a legendary player fall so dramatically, wildcards are necessary to reward past and future stars.
