Understand Yourself, Make Wise Career Choices, LASUED Don Urges Youth

Dr. Shade Adeyemi, a counselling and mental health professional at the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), has urged young people to gain a deeper understanding of themselves before making significant career and life decisions. During a live discussion on purpose, career, and wise decisions, hosted by The Counsel Room, Adeyemi shared practical advice on purpose discovery and navigating life choices.

She emphasized that self-awareness is crucial for making sound and purposeful decisions, as those who understand their strengths, weaknesses, values, and limitations are better equipped to align their choices with their goals. "Young people need to take time to understand who they are and what they value rather than making career or life choices based solely on external expectations," she stressed.

Adeyemi highlighted the importance of recognizing one's strengths and weaknesses to make informed decisions, especially when choosing a career path. "To make wise decisions, you need to understand yourself, your strengths and weaknesses," she noted, adding that self-awareness helps individuals identify areas of growth and those in which they excel.

The don also stressed the significance of intentionality in shaping a meaningful future, urging young people to make decisions that reflect their purpose and long-term aspirations. The session aimed to help participants comprehend the connection between purpose, career development, and wise decision-making, offering practical guidance for tackling the uncertainties inherent in major life choices.

Adeyemi encouraged youths to view self-awareness as an ongoing process, asserting that understanding oneself can provide clarity when confronting challenging decisions related to education, career, and personal development. "Know yourself. Make wise decisions. Build intentionally," she concluded.
