UAE oil giant says vessel attacked in Hormuz strait

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) reported on Saturday that one of its vessels was attacked while navigating the Strait of Hormuz on August 14. The incident, reported by the official WAM news agency, did not result in any injuries. ADNOC emphasized the importance of protecting seafarers and upholding freedom of navigation and maritime security.

In response to the attack, UAE Presidential Adviser Anwar Gargash reaffirmed the Gulf state's commitment to defending its rights to freedom of navigation. He stated that the repeated targeting of ADNOC tankers would not dissuade the UAE from pursuing a balanced and prudent policy based on deterrence, diplomacy, and adherence to international law.

This announcement came a day after the UAE accused Iran of attacking two vessels connected to ADNOC while they were transiting the strait. The UAE foreign ministry condemned the "hostile Iranian attack" and reported no injuries. ADNOC has faced multiple attacks in the waterway since the war between the United States and Iran began in February.

The collapse of an April ceasefire and a June deal aimed at negotiating a permanent settlement have led to ongoing disputes over the strait's future. Iran has proposed specific conditions for reopening the strait, including an end to the war against Iran and its regional allies, lifting of sanctions, and compensation for wartime damage.
