Two women dead and two children injured after deadly León flash flood

On Saturday, August 15, a catastrophic flash flood struck the León countryside, resulting in the tragic loss of two women and leaving two children with minor injuries. The disaster unfolded in the village of Manzanedo de Valdueza, located near Ponferrada.

A violent storm triggered a torrent of water and mud which swept through the mountainous area surrounding the village. This forceful surge of water and debris was channeled down Calle de la Iglesia, reaching the bodega where six people had sought shelter. Two women, aged 60 and 80, succumbed to the forces of nature inside the bodega, while two children managed to escape with minor injuries and received medical attention.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 7:38pm, and a swift and extensive response was mounted. Firefighters, police, medical teams, the Castilla y León emergency coordination centre, and psychological assistance organization GRIPDE all played key roles in the rescue and recovery operations. A rescue helicopter was also deployed to assist in the complex mission.

While Manzanedo de Valdueza was the primary focus of the emergency response, the storm also affected the nearby locality of Bouzas, causing damage to vehicles and roads. Additional landslides and flooding were reported in the surrounding area, further complicating rescue efforts.

The tragedy underscores the dangers of summer storms in mountainous regions, as conditions can change rapidly and lead to sudden and devastating consequences.
