Trump posts photo with N.K. leader Kim, says he, Kim 'get along great'

U.S. President Donald Trump shared a photo on social media on August 15, 2021, showcasing his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the Panmunjom border village back in 2019. In the caption, Trump stated that he and Kim get along great, emphasizing his readiness for dialogue with the North Korean leader without any preconditions.

The White House has been indicating that President Trump is open to engaging with Kim without any requirements, yet the likelihood of Pyongyang participating in such talks remains uncertain due to their recent growth in economic, diplomatic, and military ties with Russia.

Despite the somewhat stern expression captured in this particular image, Trump's account on Truth Social highlighted numerous other photos where Kim Jong Un and he appear to be smiling, expressing that they get along great. Throughout his first term, Trump met with Kim three times: the first in Singapore in June 2018, the second in Hanoi in February 2019, and the most notable one in Panmunjom in June 2019.

The third meeting garnered significant international attention as Trump briefly stepped onto North Korean soil, becoming the first U.S. president to do so.

In a recent analysis, Victor Cha, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), suggested that Kim Jong Un could attempt to re-establish personal diplomacy with Trump. This possibility might arise after the U.S. midterm elections held in the fall, contingent upon Pyongyang embracing a revisionist approach to reinforce its standing as a nuclear-armed state.
