Torrevieja Hospital Introduces Immersive Technology to Support Mental Health Patients

Torrevieja University Hospital has installed an advanced immersive projection system to enhance the emotional well-being of patients in its Mental Health Unit. The technology projects large-scale images across walls and ceilings, accompanied by ambient sounds, creating calming environments with natural landscapes, forests, seascapes, and star-filled skies.

Healthcare professionals can adjust the content based on each patient's condition and therapeutic needs. Unlike conventional VR systems, this installation doesn't require patients to wear headsets or glasses, allowing for shared experiences that promote communication, interaction, and stronger therapeutic relationships. This system is part of the hospital's program to humanize healthcare and make clinical environments less intimidating.

Immersive experiences are increasingly used in mental health care to reduce stress, anxiety, and support emotional regulation, but they are not meant to replace established treatments. Hospitals are incorporating immersive technology for various purposes, including mental health therapy, pain management, physical rehabilitation, medical training, and patient education.

In February 2025, Barcelona's Hospital Clínic opened immersive rooms for children and adolescents receiving mental health treatment. Although research into immersive healthcare is still evolving, studies have shown promising results, such as improvements in anxiety and well-being following an eight-week immersive therapy program.

Projection-based systems offer advantages over headsets in hospital settings, as they avoid discomfort or disorientation and allow clinicians to remain visibly present. Over 100 healthcare centers in Spain and abroad are using similar technology. The installation at Torrevieja Hospital will allow professionals to create tailored experiences for individual patients, expanding resources within the Mental Health Inpatient Unit and contributing to a calmer, more supportive hospital experience.
