On August 15, 2026, the BJP Tamil Nadu president, Nainar Nagenthran, faced severe backlash after making inappropriate remarks directed at Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during a BJP event on Independence Day. Nagenthran referred to a recent anecdote by Vijay in the Assembly about a man asking a boy about his 'missing' father, and analogized it to asking a mother to know who the father is. This drew sharp reactions from his own party functionaries.

Health Minister K G Arunraj called Nagenthran's remarks like those of a "third-rate street-corner speaker," saying they were unfit for his position and dignity. Supporters of the DMK questioned if the Vijay Government would dare to arrest Nagenthran, similar to their recent action against Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin for a remark that seemed to link the Chief Minister with a film heroine.

Former BJP leader K Annamalai, who has since started a separate movement, condemned Nagenthran's comments as highly condemnable, saying they vulgarize the political arena of Tamil Nadu. Former Member of National Commission for Women and BJP functionary Khushbu Sundar also criticized the remark, stating it was disgusting and unacceptable on any platform. She reminded everyone that they are in this world because of a woman and a mother, and such an insult to a mother is painful and hurtful.

Nagenthran later offered a weak defense, stating that he did not speak with any ulterior motive and holds immense respect for the mother. However, this did not appease the sharp reactions from various quarters.
