Sunny Singh's widow slams Visvin Reddy's 'misleading' TikTok video

The widow of South African struggle activist Sunny Singh has criticized Visvin Reddy's misleading TikTok video. Sunny, a key figure in the ANC and uMkhonto weSizwe and a former Robben Island prisoner, passed away last November at the age of 86. President Cyril Ramaphosa granted him a special official funeral. Urmilla Singh, Sunny's widow, called Reddy's portrayal of her husband "misleading" and an attempt to boost his political credibility ahead of upcoming local elections.

In the video, Reddy claimed that at 22, Singh carried out "one of the earliest acts of sabotage against apartheid" by attacking the Durban to Johannesburg railway line. He also stated that Singh was arrested, interrogated, and sentenced to 10 years on Robben Island, where he secretly passed news summaries between political prisoners.

Urmilla countered that her husband's values did not align with those presented by Reddy, and that Singh remained a loyal member of the ANC until his death. She also disputed Reddy's claim that Sunny was born in Chatsworth, stating he was actually born and raised in Cato Manor. Reddy defended his video, stating his aim was to share Singh's story and ensure younger South Africans learned about his role in the liberation struggle, specifically within uMkhonto weSizwe.
