U.S. President Donald Trump said he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory. This is in response to recent attacks on oil tankers near the Strait. Iran dismissed the idea as "delusional fantasies". On the 21st, Trump told reporters at the White House that he was considering the designation. He said it would give the U.S. a lot of leverage in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital shipping route for oil. About 20% of the world's oil supply passes through there. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, rejected Trump's comments. He said at a news conference in Tehran that such a move would be "an obvious violation of international law". Mousavi called Trump's idea "delusional fantasies" and "absurd".
