South Korean president proposes talks with North to formally end Korean War

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has proposed discussions with North Korea to officially conclude the Korean War, which has technically continued since 1950 due to the absence of a peace treaty. The 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule was marked by a ceremony in Seoul, where Lee addressed the issue.

He stated, "Let us put down our intentions to threaten each other and begin discussions to end the long-running war as the directly involved parties." Lee's proposal coincides with North Korea's recent denouncement of upcoming US-South Korean military exercises and its increasing military ties with Russia. North Korea has been expanding its nuclear capabilities and recently fired two missiles in response to Japan's military build-up in the Pacific.

Despite North Korea's declaration as an "irreversible" nuclear state since the collapse of a 2019 summit with US President Donald Trump, South Korea's president is offering nuclear-armed Pyongyang talks without preconditions. Analysts suggest that North Korea is receiving financial aid, food, energy, and military technology from Russia for its involvement in Ukraine's war.

The US continues to station around 28,500 troops in South Korea to counter potential threats from Pyongyang.
