Qatar denies detaining Iranian pilots, details airspace incident response

Qatar's Foreign Ministry has firmly rejected claims that Iranian pilots were detained, dismissing the reports as "misleading." The ministry emphasized that it took necessary measures to defend its territory following a breach of Qatari airspace. Upon detecting the intrusion, Qatari authorities initiated contact with the pilots and ascertained their intended flight path.

Despite attempts to establish communication, no response was received from the pilots. In accordance with international law, Qatar executed appropriate actions to safeguard its territory, disclosing the incident's specifics prior to public disclosure through official channels.

Concerning the pilots' whereabouts, the Foreign Ministry revealed that search and rescue teams from Qatar conducted operations to locate their remains, acknowledging the teams' international expertise and capabilities. Qatar affirmed coordination with Iranian authorities to facilitate the transfer of one pilot's remains, discovered by Qatari teams, in accordance with applicable international humanitarian law.

The ministry pointed out that in April, it had extended an invitation to an Iranian team to inspect the search and rescue operations in Qatar, though Iran had yet to respond to this offer.

The ministry criticized the timing of recent statements regarding the pilots' detention, arguing that they occurred amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
