PM Modi’s Independence Day 2026 speech: Here are the key announcements

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking from the Red Fort in his 13th consecutive Independence Day address, unveiled several key initiatives aimed at propelling India towards a developed nation status by 2047. The speech focused on seven sectors - manufacturing, food processing, technology, innovation, digital technologies, defense manufacturing, and sports - to build a Viksit Bharat. Among the announcements, four stood out.

Firstly, Modi announced plans to train one crore youth in AI over the next year, positioning technology and innovation at the heart of India’s growth. He stressed the importance of leadership in emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space technology, robotics, and data centres. Secondly, the Prime Minister pledged free online coaching for competitive examinations, intending to alleviate the financial burden on families.

The government would leverage existing digital public infrastructure, educators, and technological resources to build a nationwide network offering free coaching. Thirdly, Modi reiterated his vision of India becoming a global hub for defense manufacturing, focusing on self-reliance in advanced technologies like hypersonic systems, drones, and counter-drone platforms.

He also highlighted the progress in the development of an indigenous air defence system, Sudarshan Chakra. Lastly, the Prime Minister announced a nationwide talent hunt for children aged 5 to 15 years to identify and nurture sporting prospects, aiming for India to participate in at least three-fourths of Olympic events by 2036.
