Omar Abdullah’s I-Day speech: ‘Decision our leaders took 80 years ago was right’

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's Independence Day speech highlighted the decision taken by leaders 80 years ago that was right for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He stated that if the state's constitutional structure had not been altered in 2019, people from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir would be protesting to reunite with them. Omar called for the strengthening of federalism in the country, warning that the use of central agencies to usurp state powers leads to the same problems seen at Jantar Mantar.

He remarked that the people who chanted "Hamla awar khabardar, hum Kashmiri hain tayyar" were right in their stance. Omar expressed sadness and concern for the situation in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, as if their situation had remained unchanged, they would be protesting to reunite with them today. He emphasized that democracy and federalism are the two greatest strengths of India, urging their safeguarding and strengthening, particularly starting from Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar pointed out that converting a Union Territory to a state does not constitute federalism, and urged the strengthening of every state within the country. He attributed the recent Gen Z protests to the interference of central agencies in state affairs, noting that when central agencies undermine states' powers, federalism is compromised.

He concluded that the 99-year-old freedom fighter's message to Gen Z remains relevant today, urging continued movements and reflection on how to make the country great in its 80th year of independence.
