NPP Ashanti elections: 1,020 delegates to choose 11 regional executives

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region is preparing to elect new regional executives, with 1,020 delegates anticipated to take part in the process. A total of 34 candidates are vying for 11 executive positions in an election that will shape the party's regional organization and grassroots outreach. The polls will be held at Kumasi Jubilee Park today, August 15, as the NPP strives to bolster its structures, restore unity among members, and re-energize its support in the Ashanti Region, which is crucial to the party's operations.

In the most fiercely contested race is the regional chairmanship, currently between Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, known as COKA, and Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu. Both have held high-ranking positions within the party and provide a wealth of political experience and networks. Odeneho Kwaku Appiah is seeking to maintain or enhance his influence within the regional party structure, whereas Dr Kokofu, formerly a Member of Parliament for Bantama and former CEO of the Environmental Protection Agency, is seeking the endorsement of delegates to lead the region.

The chairmanship race has become a focal point of the elections, with delegates expected to consider the candidates' experience, organizational capabilities, and their vision for revitalizing the party. In anticipation of the vote, campaign materials from the candidates have become commonplace around Kumasi Jubilee Park, the site of the event.

The Electoral Commission, Ghana Police Service, and the NPP’s Election Committee are all poised to facilitate the election and its security. These bodies have expressed readiness for the exercise, promising a peaceful and credible process. The newly chosen executives will be tasked with guiding the NPP's regional affairs, including bolstering grassroots structures, enhancing internal coordination, and rallying members for upcoming elections.

The results of the election will also indicate the direction delegates desire the party to take as it aims to solidify its organization in the Ashanti Region, a key stronghold for the NPP.
