News in Easy English: Japanese and British high schoolers study science together in Tokyo

TOKYO -- Japanese and British high school students recently participated in an international exchange program at Rikkyo University in Tokyo's Toshima Ward. The event, called the UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop, was established by Britain's Clifton Scientific Trust in 2001. The 32nd workshop took place from August 4 to 7, with around 50 high school students working in groups to study seven different science themes through experiments and analysis. On the final day, the students presented their findings in English.

One group worked with Professor Mao Minoura from Rikkyo University's College of Science, who helped them create indigo dye. Indigo holds cultural and historical significance in both Japan and Britain. The team used the dye to color fabric. Professor Minoura also discussed the history of synthetic dyes, highlighting how a single chemical reaction can impact both history and culture.

Professor Minoura emphasized the challenge of studying complex scientific concepts in English, but also noted the positive experience of forming friendships with British students and engaging in an intercultural exchange. Kyoto Seibo Gakuin High School second-year student Itsuki Miyata shared her thoughts on the experience, stating that it provided a wide range of experiences through the cultural exchange.
