My Journey at Gen AI Academy APAC Edition: Building the Future with AI & Hardware

Halfway through the Gen AI Academy's APAC Edition, the reality of how much there is still to learn became apparent. The experience was eye-opening, as it was not merely about understanding AI concepts but about putting them into practice. Coming from a background in Cybersecurity and Computer Science Engineering, the student thought they had a solid foundation in AI. However, the reality was quite different and more exciting.

The academy doesn't just focus on theory; it's about hands-on experience, trial and error, and continuous learning. Participants are involved in multiple tracks simultaneously. In Track A, known as HackTronix 2.0, the team is developing a 3D LiDAR-based system to evaluate shelter damage after natural disasters. This project combines computer vision, hardware, and real-world applications, providing a valuable learning experience that goes beyond textbook knowledge.

Another track, EVA (Early Vulnerability Assessment for Women's Aspirations), is an AI platform being developed for a hackathon. This project is particularly meaningful as it aims to create tools that can genuinely benefit underrepresented groups. The workshops have been informative, but the true learning comes from understanding the real-world constraints of AI, such as hardware limitations, edge cases, and the complexities of actual deployment.

The academy emphasizes the importance of speed and efficiency. The fast-paced nature of hackathons teaches participants to make quick decisions, to learn from failures, and to adapt to the realities of real-world application. The community aspect of the academy is another key takeaway. Being surrounded by people who share a passion for AI and hardware fosters a sense of camaraderie and collaboration.

The upcoming Track 2 workshop, scheduled for 1:30 PM IST the following day, promises to further enhance the learning experience. Participants are already strategizing for the upcoming challenges. With only 16 days left to complete HackTronix and EVA, the participants are working towards a common goal, driven by the excitement of seeing their projects come to life (or learn from the challenges they face).
