Live QBs, young receivers and defensive reserves: 3 things to watch for in UNM's 1st fall scrimmage

Three aspects to watch at UNM's first fall scrimmage:

1. Live quarterbacks Luke Moga and Toa Fa'avae are set to face each other in Saturday's scrimmage, providing a chance to evaluate their performance and decision-making in a full-contact setting. Head coach Jason Eck sees this as an opportunity to narrow down the competition, as Moga has shown improvement in avoiding mistakes and extending plays.

Fa'avae, while still a threat on the ground, would need an error-free performance to make a strong impression. Sixth-year quarterback James Laubstein will not participate in the live scrimmage.

2. Freshmen receivers Kader Diop highlighted a promising group of young talent, including Massiah Mingo, DJ Darling, Bailen George, and Dorian Patterson. These recruits have demonstrated their ability to create separation, run precise routes, and catch passes over the middle. While this group has shown potential, the scrimmage will be a real test of their skills against UNM's defense.

3. UNM's defensive reserves, including linebacker Clay Martineau, cornerbacks Eric McClain and Jahmir Torres, and safety Kevin Longstreet, will also be put to the test. Head coach Eck has noticed significant improvements in Martineau's speed and ability to blitz, making him a potential top reserve linebacker. Additionally, the scrimmage will provide insight into the depth and strengths of the overall defense as UNM looks to shore up its secondary ahead of the upcoming season.
