LG and Nvidia Join Hands to Build Robots and AI Cars

LG and Nvidia announced a new partnership on August 13 at Nvidia's headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding to expand their existing AI collaboration into real-world applications, including humanoid robots, AI factories, and autonomous vehicles. LG CEO Kwang Mo Koo met with Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang to formalize the agreement, which aims to accelerate the development and deployment of AI technologies.

The biggest announcement from the partnership is the development of a next-generation bipedal humanoid robot that LG plans to unveil in Q1 2027. The robot will utilize Nvidia Jetson Thor for onboard computing, the Isaac GR00T open humanoid foundation model for reasoning and control, and Nvidia's Halos for Robotics safety system. LG will leverage technologies from its subsidiaries, such as actuators, sensors, and batteries, to create the robot.

In addition to the humanoid robot, LG will continue to develop its wheeled CLOiD robot, which will be deployed at its washing machine manufacturing facility in Tennessee by the end of 2026. This testing environment will help LG refine the robot before expanding its use to other global factories, commercial spaces, and homes. The companies will also build a robot data factory using LG CNS' PhysicalWorks platform for data collection, synthetic-data generation, training, and validation.

This data will assist LG in developing its own Robot Foundation Model while continuing to use Nvidia's Isaac GR00T.

The partnership extends to autonomous vehicles, with LG planning to create a high-performance platform for next-generation AI-Defined Vehicles using Nvidia DRIVE Hyperion. This system will integrate Nvidia's autonomous-driving technology with LG's in-vehicle infotainment and automotive software, allowing the companies to provide hardware and software solutions to global automakers. These solutions will combine autonomous-driving capabilities with in-cabin AI services.

LG aims to create industry-leading reference projects to accelerate deployment of AI technologies, covering areas such as homes, factories, and vehicles. Nvidia's Jensen Huang emphasized that physical AI could enable machines to understand the real world, reason, and safely interact with humans, covering all aspects of life from homes to factories.

LG's collaboration with Samsung, which has expanded its robotics division and has a significant presence in automotive electronics, further highlights the growing importance of AI and robotics in the industry.
