KPA steps up port security measures to boost safety of Mombasa port

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is bolstering port security measures at the Port of Mombasa to enhance safety and safeguard international maritime trade. This comes as the KPA intensifies its implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, a framework established in 2004 under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

The code mandates the identification of security threats, assessment of vulnerabilities, and implementation of preventive measures for ships and port facilities. KPA's recent awarding of certificates to over 40 security officers, following their completion of security awareness training at Mombasa, underscores the importance of compliance to maintaining the port as a secure and reliable maritime gateway for Kenya and the region.

These officers underwent training that included practical security drills designed to assess their readiness, deepen their operational knowledge, and bolster their capacity to recognize and address potential security gaps. Tony Kibwana, KPA's Manager of Security Services, emphasized that security is integral to port operations, stating, “Security is not separate from port operations.

It is one of the conditions that makes those operations possible.” He further highlighted that regular training, exercises, and assessments are crucial in enabling security personnel to effectively translate established procedures into real-world action. The ISPS Code's requirements for port facilities to maintain robust security measures, procedures, and trained personnel are essential for ensuring the resilience of the maritime supply chain, particularly for Mombasa, a vital link for Kenya and neighboring countries.

By continuing to enhance security awareness, personnel competence, and preparedness across its facilities, KPA remains dedicated to upholding international maritime security standards.
