Kilifi teacher handed 10-year jail term for seducing pupil

A Kilifi Court has handed a primary school teacher a 10-year prison sentence for sexually abusing a student. The District Public Prosecutor presented six witnesses, including the complainant, her mother, the school principal, the area assistant chief, and a clinical officer. Senior Resident Magistrate Hon. Ivy D. Wasike found the accused guilty of abusing their position of authority, as outlined in Section 24(4) of the Sexual Offences Act.

The unlawful relationship between the teacher and the student was uncovered when an informant overheard students discussing the matter and reported it to a teacher. The complainant later testified in court that the teacher took her to a secluded area and tried to force sexual intercourse upon her. The teacher had previously written a love letter to the student.

The prosecution emphasized that the accused, a teacher, should have been a guardian rather than a predator of the minor. The judge commended the school principal for ensuring that justice was served and not ignored. The teacher's record was forwarded to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for further action. The convicted teacher was given 14 days to appeal the verdict and sentence.
