Japan's Takaichi sends offering to Yasukuni Shrine on WWII anniversary

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi passed by Tokyo's controversial Yasukuni Shrine, likely to strengthen ties with China and South Korea, as Japan commemorated the 81st anniversary of its World War II surrender. Unlike her absence, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, three other cabinet ministers and three executives from her ruling party visited the shrine, offering prayers and gifts.

China's Foreign Ministry condemned the visits, accusing Japanese politicians of attempting to alter historical judgment, hide wartime atrocities, and advance militarization. Tensions escalated between Japan and China after Takaichi suggested a Chinese attack on Taiwan could be a survival threat requiring military action. South Korean President Jae Myung also emphasized pragmatic diplomacy, cooperation, and addressing shared challenges.

Takaichi, who has previously vowed to pray at the shrine despite controversy, reiterated her commitment to Japan's postwar responsibility and peace.
