As the 60-day ceasefire between the US and Iran nears its end, tensions remain high in the strategically important Hormuz Strait. Two vessels belonging to the UAE's state-owned oil company, Adnoc, were attacked in the strait during the night, though no one was injured. The UAE's state news agency, WAM, reported the incident, but no damage to the ships was immediately disclosed.

The UAE strongly condemned the attack, blaming Iran and calling it a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which upholds the freedom of navigation. Iran claims it is working to remove an oil slick near the Keschm Island in the strait. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai suggested Iran should be compensated for its efforts to mitigate pollution, stating that any party benefiting from the strait's shipping traffic should contribute to the cleanup and prevention of such incidents.

The semi-governmental Iranian news agency, Isna, shared images purportedly showing oil spills on the beaches of Keschm. However, Iran has not commented on the cause of the oil spill. Satellite images from TankerTrackers.com, published on Twitter, indicated that the cause was likely an Iranian attack on a bulk carrier near Oman's coast, causing the oil to flow into the strait towards Iran.

Baghai questioned who should be responsible for compensation, suggesting it could be the countries benefiting from cheap energy exports, marine insurance companies, or the aggressors themselves who have transformed the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea into a battlefield for military operations and the testing of highly destructive weapons.

Meanwhile, Oman is dealing with another oil spill originating from a tanker that ran aground far to the south, outside the Hormuz Strait. The cause of this spill has not been identified, and no party has claimed responsibility. Environmental experts warn that oil has likely spilled from the grounded tanker near an island, endangering a marine protected area.
